QUEST

The QUEST project (Quasar Equatorial Survey Team) has been initiated to investigate topics in astrophysics and cosmology.  The original motivation was to constrain the cosmological parameters on which the age and future development of our universe depend, a search for dark matter, a  study of the properties of dark energy, and eventually a measurement of Hubble's constant.  Of particular emphasis was the study of quasars, in particular the gravitational lensing of quasars and quasar spectra at high redshift, and a study of type Ia supernovae.  In addition a variety of other topics in astronomy and astrophysics are of interest.

The project has proceeded in two distinct phases:

  1. QUEST-Venezuela, using a 16 CCD detector array, covering about 2o x 2o, using the Schmidt telescope at the CIDA observatory in Venezuela.
  2. The Palomar-QUEST Variability Survey, using a large area detector consisting of 112 CCD's and covering 4o x 4o using the Oschin Schmidt Telescope at the Palomar Observatory of CalTech in California.
